Czech logistics firm Metrans integrates six Volvo FH Electric trucks to cut emissions and advance climate-neutral operations by 2040, with upcoming models promising up to 600 km range.
Czech logistics company Metrans, part of Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA), has integrated six Volvo FH Electric trucks into its fleet to enhance its urban and suburban deliveries. This strategic move aims to reduce emissions and support the company's broader climate goals, including achieving climate-neutral operations by 2040. The electric trucks will mainly handle first and last mile container transportation, connecting freight terminals with customer locations.
The Volvo FH Electric, first launched in 2022 and significantly updated in 2024 with the Aero model, features improved aerodynamics and a camera system replacing traditional exterior mirrors. It offers battery capacities between 360 and 540 kWh, delivering up to 490 kW of continuous power, with a typical range of approximately 300 km per charge. Volvo has announced a long-range version expected to be available in the second half of 2025, capable of covering up to 600 km on a single charge. This model will incorporate electronic axle technology that combines the motor, gearbox, and axle into a single unit, further enhancing battery capacity and efficiency, aligning with Volvo’s commitment to reducing CO₂ emissions in transportation.
Peter Kiss, CEO of Metrans, emphasized the importance of this investment, stating, “Electric trucks are a crucial step for our future. They reflect not only advanced technology but also our strong dedication to customers and society. We aim to demonstrate that business success and ecological responsibility can go hand in hand.” The deployment of these trucks exemplifies Metrans’ approach to multimodal logistics—using rail for long-distance shipping and trucks for short-distance deliveries—making urban freight handling more environmentally friendly by reducing noise and pollution.
Volvo Trucks welcomed the partnership, with John Muldoon, director of Volvo Group Czechia, highlighting that the FH Electric is a “powerful, zero-emission vehicle that meets the demands of modern logistics without compromise.”
In addition to the current models, Volvo has announced the upcoming introduction of a long-range FH Electric version anticipated to launch in the second half of 2025, capable of up to 600 km of range on a single charge. This development will feature advanced electronic axle technology designed to maximize battery capacity and efficiency, supporting Volvo's broader aim of decreasing CO₂ emissions sector-wide.
Testing efforts have demonstrated the truck's potential; for example, an independent road test in Germany showed a fully loaded FH Electric with a gross combination weight of 40 tonnes achieved a range of 345 km on one charge—surpassing the official 300 km estimate. The truck demonstrated energy efficiency of approximately 1.1 kWh/km, and with short charging breaks, it could potentially cover more than 500 km during a typical workday.
The Aero Electric version focuses on city-to-city transport, combining aerodynamic design with flexible power take-offs suitable for various applications, including bodywork and construction. It offers quick recharging options, with full charges possible in around 9.5 hours using 43 kW AC power, or approximately 2.5 hours with 250 kW DC fast charging—key features for operational efficiency.
Overall, Metrans’ adoption of electric trucks exemplifies the ongoing shift toward greener freight solutions across Europe, driven by stricter regulations and environmental commitments. This move not only helps meet climate targets but also positions Metrans as a forward-thinking leader in sustainable logistics, demonstrating that electric heavy-duty vehicles are increasingly viable for diverse delivery needs.
