Volvo Penta’s new collaboration with e-power introduces transportable, high-density Battery Energy Storage Systems designed to support sustainability and electrification in the construction rental sector, starting with Boels Rental.
Volvo Penta, a longstanding leader in marine propulsion and industrial power solutions, has recently entered the renewable energy sector through a partnership with Belgian power solutions provider e-power. The focus of this collaboration is on developing scalable Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) tailored for the construction rental industry, notably supporting Boels Rental, one of Europe's largest equipment rental companies.
At the heart of this effort is Volvo Penta's BESS subsystem, which includes battery packs, a Battery Management System (BMS), DC/DC converters, and thermal management components. This integration-ready design enables e-power to develop a compact, high-density, and transportable energy storage solution optimized for rental operations. The system's adaptable architecture allows e-power to modify and scale the solution to meet diverse customer requirements or specific site conditions.
Boels Rental, which has historically utilized generators equipped with Volvo Penta engines, is progressively moving toward electrification and sustainability. Through these BESS units, Boels aims to provide cleaner, quieter, and more mobile energy solutions—essential qualities for construction sites and industrial environments. These systems are intended to support electric machinery and supplement on-site power needs, reducing reliance on grid power and lowering emissions during operation.
Volvo Penta's commitment to sustainability is evident in its broader strategy, including transitioning all diesel engines to run on hydro-treated vegetable oil (HVO), which can reduce well-to-wheel emissions by up to 90%. The company is also exploring fossil-free power solutions for heavy-duty applications such as terminal tractors, forklifts, drill rigs, and feed mixers, aligning with global efforts toward electrification and reducing carbon footprints.
Introducing these BESS units signifies a meaningful shift in rental power systems, emphasizing silent operation, low emissions, and increased portability—attributes highly valued in modern construction and industrial sectors. Per e-power business support director Jens Fets, "We’ve built our reputation on reliability and efficient power systems. Working again with Volvo Penta, this time on battery energy storage, allows us to meet the growing demand for energy in a silent, low-emissions, compact and mobile design—especially in rental applications."
Deploying these advanced energy storage systems will enable Boels to better serve customer demands for sustainable, silent, and mobile power solutions across construction and industrial applications. This collaborative effort underscores a broader industry trend toward greener and more adaptable power solutions, supporting a more sustainable future across sectors.
