Phillips Connect's new app, TechAssist, aims to revolutionise the installation and upkeep of Class 8 trailer systems, enhancing diagnostic accuracy and operational efficiency for fleets and OEMs alike.
Phillips Connect has launched a new app called TechAssist, which is designed to make the installation, verification, and ongoing maintenance of smart trailer systems much easier—specifically for those big, demanding Class 8 trailers that face rough environments, encountering everything from road debris and corrosion to collisions. Todd Thibault, who’s the senior director of field services over at Phillips Connect, pointed out that this app plays a key role in making sure that trailer tech health and diagnostics are a seamless part of fleet maintenance routines. The idea, as I understand it, is to confirm that every sensor, gateway, and system on a trailer is fully working before it even leaves the factory. This provides original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) with the peace of mind that their trailers are ready to deliver, functioning properly from day one.
What’s interesting about TechAssist is that it guides every step of the install process. It walks maintenance technicians through a workflow that not only helps them get the job done but gives a full diagnostic picture of a trailer’s health before it departs the yard. It can identify issues early and even lead technicians through the necessary repair steps. Honestly, I think this is especially handy for less experienced techs, because troubleshooting smart trailer systems isn’t always straightforward. Todd Hughes, who handles product management at Phillips Connect, emphasized that they developed the app after quite a lot of collaboration with big fleets and trailer OEMs. The goal was really to directly address their main pains and expectations. He even said it’s not just a tool—more like a vital component in making sure a trailer’s investment hits the ground running.
The features on TechAssist are quite comprehensive, tailored to boost usability and operational flow. For instance, it uses Bluetooth for asset discovery—so finding connected devices becomes much faster. It also offers real-time diagnostics covering gateway health and sensor states, which is super helpful for quick checks. Plus, instead of manually entering data, technicians can scan barcodes to connect sensors via the app—making the process smoother. There’s offline access, too, which comes in handy in environments where connectivity isn’t reliable, and the app supports enterprise security with Single Sign-On (SSO). The troubleshooting workflows aren’t just checklist-style—they guide the user step-by-step and include warnings to prevent errors during installation or checks. Furthermore, the app has expanded support for newer sensor types, like automatic tire inflation system (ATIS) regulators and air tank sensors, alongside enhanced insights into ABS system status through connections with ABS and programmable logic controller (PLC) readers. It’s available on both iOS and Android, so techs can use whichever device they prefer.
Building on its broader portfolio, Phillips Connect’s introduction of TechAssist continues the company’s push into smart trailer tech. They’ve integrated sensors, cameras, telematics gateways, and software that provide fleets with live data—covering trailer locations, tire and brake conditions, cargo monitoring, and door status, among others. This push in digital tech plays into their bigger goal of improving fleet safety, efficiency, and equipment uptime, which can really help reduce downtime and maintenance costs over time. They also offer complementary apps like DriverAssist, which gives drivers real-time trailer info integrated right into fleet management platforms. And there’s InstallAssist, designed to simplify high-tech trailer installations—though, interestingly enough, this one’s only available on Android.
All in all, TechAssist’s extensive capabilities suggest big benefits for trailer OEMs, maintenance teams, and repair shops. It can improve installation accuracy, cut down diagnostic times, and enhance preventive maintenance practices. By rolling out these innovations, Phillips Connect seems focused on tackling some of the tough industry challenges faced by Class 8 trailers—namely the harsh operational environments—and ultimately aims to boost trailer performance and extend service life.
