Nexen Tire secures its position as the original equipment supplier for Kia's new PV5 electric van, introducing a purpose-built tyre designed to boost efficiency, safety, and comfort for urban delivery fleets amid accelerating EV adoption.

Nexen Tire has officially been named as the original equipment (OE) tyre supplier for Kia’s next-generation PV5 electric van, with its NBlue S tyre chosen for the 215/65R16 102H fitment. The PV5 is actually Kia’s first purpose-built vehicle (or PBV), developed on their dedicated E-GMP electric platform. Mainly designed as a commercial van, it targets delivery companies and urban logistics operators, forming part of a flexible lineup that also includes passenger and lifestyle versions.

Now, tyres play a really crucial role in electric commercial vehicles—affecting things like efficiency, safety, noise, and overall durability, especially for fleets and drivers doing long shifts. Nexen’s NBlue S has been specifically engineered with electric vehicles in mind. It’s designed to cut down on rolling resistance to boost energy efficiency and, consequently, extend the driving range. The tyre’s advanced design also features Sidewall Aero Dynamic technology, which reduces noise and enhances aerodynamics—pretty handy for van drivers who frequently go through traffic in busy city areas. Plus, its simplified tread pattern improves water drainage and wet traction, which means better braking stability and steady grip during those frequent stop-and-go urban deliveries.

The Kia PV5 is a key part of Kia’s global PBV strategy—aiming for flexible hardware and software options that can serve various roles: delivery vans, wheelchair-accessible vehicles, ride-hailing fleets, or tailored conversions. Its flat floor and modular body options make it particularly appealing for fleet operators who value adaptable, future-proof electric commercial vehicles that maximize uptime and keep costs down.

Nexen’s CEO, John Bosco (or Hyeon Suk) Kim, underscored just how important this tyre deal is. He mentioned that it highlights the company’s technological edge in the rapidly changing future mobility scene, especially as electrification and personalization continue to grow. Kim also stressed Nexen’s dedication to strengthening partnerships with automakers worldwide, supporting the expanding ecosystem of future mobility solutions. This new deal builds on Nexen’s existing relationships with Kia, which include supplying tyres for the EV6 and EV9 models.

Looking at the data on the NBlue S tyre, it’s clear it’s well-suited for a busy, commercial electric role like that of the PV5. The tyre features Highly Dispersed Silica in its compound, which, by the way, delivers about 11% better wet braking distances compared to earlier versions—making it safer in rainy or wet conditions, which is definitely important for urban delivery vehicles often exposed to unpredictable weather. Its design also effectively reduces road noise and stabilizes handling, both of which are pretty important for driver comfort during longer shifts. Plus, its eco-friendly construction helps lower fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions, aligning well with sustainability goals in electric vehicle operations.

In terms of performance, the NBlue S is considered a premium summer tyre for touring—meaning it delivers solid grip on both dry and wet roads, along with handling and comfort qualities that support the demanding workloads of electric delivery vans. Its rolling resistance ranges from A to C, which really helps maximize efficiency and extend driving range. The tyre comes in various sizes, including options suitable for cars and SUVs, and the 215/65R16 size has been specifically tailored to meet the load and operational demands of electric LCVs like the PV5.

Kia is planning to introduce the PV5 in the UK later this year, with deliveries expected to start reaching customers by 2026. This timeline gives fleet managers and aftermarket suppliers enough time to prepare for these adaptable, electric-powered vans—especially with tyres that push forward efficiency, safety, and driver comfort in urban logistics settings. It’s pretty interesting, right? How the industry is moving toward smarter, greener solutions—I find it pretty surprising sometimes how quickly things are changing.
