Hyundai unveils the IONIQ 3 at IAA Mobility 2025 as a compact, software-first EV for Europe, with Pleos OS, dual-battery options, OTA updates, and Türkiye-based manufacturing to strengthen local supply.
Hyundai is pushing ahead with its next major move into Europe’s growing electric-vehicle market. The IONIQ 3 is slated to debut at Munich’s IAA Mobility show in September 2025 as a nearly production-ready concept. The model sits between the Inster and the Kona Electric, with a focus on digital technology and a more approachable price. Prototypes pictured ahead of the show hint at a compact footprint. This move signals Hyundai’s intention to blend practicality with advanced tech rather than merely tease a concept.
The company has confirmed a two-battery lineup — 58.3 kWh and 81.4 kWh — targeting WLTP ranges of roughly 260 and 365 miles, respectively. Performance is brisk, with 0–62 mph in under eight seconds, and front-wheel drive is chosen to boost efficiency. The IONIQ 3 uses a 400-volt electrical system, a cost-conscious choice compared with Hyundai’s higher-voltage family, while still delivering solid in-market practicality. This configuration keeps the door open for efficient everyday use while keeping manufacturing and cost considerations in mind.
On the software and connectivity front, the IONIQ 3 is set to showcase notable upgrades, including Apple CarPlay Ultra support and Hyundai’s Pleos operating system, which underpins a software-defined-vehicle (SDV) approach. Pleos includes Pleos Connect (a next-generation infotainment system based on Android Automotive OS), Pleos Playground (an open development platform for third-party apps), and an in-vehicle App Market to unlock features post-sale, giving owners a path to ongoing functionality upgrades. OTA updates and continuous software improvements are central to this software-first mobility strategy.
Manufacturing plans reinforce Hyundai’s European localization aims: the IONIQ 3 will be built in Türkiye to support a tighter local footprint and lower shipping costs, reinforcing a European production presence that already leverages plants in the Czech Republic and Türkiye to supply the region. Hyundai has highlighted that a large share of its 2024 European sales came from models produced in those factories, and the IONIQ 3’s local production is intended to bolster availability and competitiveness in Europe. Hyundai Türkiye has announced plans to commence EV production at its İzmit plant from 2026 as part of this regional strategy.
Behind the IONIQ 3’s public-facing debut lies Hyundai Motor Group’s broader software ambitions. The Pleos brand—launched with Pleos Connect—promises openness and scalability, with a smartphone-like UI, split-view, and personal profiles. Pleos Playground provides an open platform for third-party app development and distribution through an in-vehicle App Market. These elements, together with OTA capability and a modular E&E architecture, support Hyundai’s SDV concept by decoupling software evolution from hardware cycles and enabling feature unlocks after purchase. Pleos is also positioned within a wider cloud-enabled mobility ecosystem aimed at fostering third-party collaborations and recurring services.
The IONIQ 3 represents the next phase in Hyundai’s EV expansion: a compact, digital-first, and affordable option built for Europe. With competitive range estimates, advanced connectivity, and regional production, it is set to be an important model in Hyundai’s transition to electrification. Enthusiasts and buyers can expect the IONIQ 3 to go on sale in early 2026, shortly after its Munich debut in September 2025.
